As a whole, the Selma Arts Center's 2019 season is so edgy and gritty compared to what the theatre company is used to producing. In talking with the directors of next seasons shows, I found that even the more family-friendly titles will undertake a slightly darker tone. I wanted to reflect that with some fuzzy titles, color offsets, slightly unsettling yet dreamlike imagery, and lots of hot neon highlight. Selma Arts Center is anything buy shy or uninteresting, so it's artwork may never be shy or uninteresting.
There are subtle references to other forms of entertainment and other aesthetic that I consider inspiration to my own personal taste and style from Stranger Things, to 3D films, black-lights, and even Are You Afraid of the Dark? These elements all meet at the intersection of foreboding and playful. It was fun and very challenging to draw from these media and create something new and original from the elements while at the same time make the different six images one cohesive series. They will eventually be resized into their usual 11x17" poster renderings as the new season draws closer and campaigning begins.
